Orthodontics is an exciting and rewarding profession and I feel lucky to be a part of it. I became interested in orthodontics at a young age because I loved how science and art were used together to create beautiful smiles and provide a lifelong service to patients. It’s great being able to interact with my patients every day. I love seeing the positive changes that take place and the confidence they gain as I help create the smile they’ve always wanted.
Life at Home
Family is the most important part of my life and my greatest source of happiness. My wife, Sarah, and I have four children; Annie, Leah, James and Kate. We love to travel and visit family as much as possible, but when we’re home you’ll most likely find us up at the lake in the summer, on the slopes in the winter, or at our children’s various sporting events and performances all year round. I love photography and videography, which means all of these family activities are always thoroughly documented. I also love music and enjoy playing the piano and guitar.

Kevin Olson, DMD
Dr. Kevin Olson, a native Nevadan, grew up in the small Nevada town of Pioche. He was the valedictorian of his class in a high school with about 200 students. He graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of Nevada, Reno, with an English degree and attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine in 2009, graduating Summa cum Laude.
As a board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Olson’s goal is to provide positive dental experiences early in childhood to keep kids dental visits fear-free into their adult lives. Early in dental school, he witnessed a very difficult and uncomfortable dental appointment for a little girl. Thinking she was likely to continue to be fearful of the dentist for the rest of her life, he worried she would suffer additional dental problems. From that point forward, Dr. Olson set out to prevent some of those terrible experiences early on in an effort to change kids’ dental experiences.
In 2011, he completed his pediatric residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and then immediately came to Carson City and opened Carson City Pediatric Dentistry. In 2019, Carson City Pediatric Dentistry opened a second location in Dayton, Nevada, called Dayton Pediatric Dentistry.
As a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Olson is well versed in the specialty of pediatric dentistry.
He is a member of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association®, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Northern Nevada Dental Society, National Dental Association, and the Nevada Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Olson met his wife, Teah, at UNR while she was completing her degree in nursing. They have four children and spend family time playing sports, reading and increasing Star Wars trivia knowledge. Dr. Olson’s favorite hobby is woodworking, and several of his projects adorn the office. His most recent masterpiece is the TNT toy box.
Dr. Olson is passionate about helping children and helping make their early dental experiences positive for the rest of their lives. He also hopes that by creating more and more winning smiles, he can help the Resistance keep the First Order from taking over the galaxy.

My Kid's Smile
Nicole Bui-Fong, DDS
Pediatric Dentist
The thing I love most about pediatric dentistry is that it is never boring! Kids are so honest and unpredictable. Each day of work is fun, different, and refreshing. Just as each child is unique, every family is unique as well. I take pride in getting to know my patients and their families so that I can deliver a personalized approach to dental care that meets each family’s individual needs. I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended the University of California, San Diego for my undergraduate education. After college, I interned at the office of my childhood pediatric dentist and fell in love with working with children. I obtained my DDS degree at UCLA and completed the Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry Program at the University of Southern California (USC) and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). During my training at CHLA, I exclusively treated children with medically and behaviorally complex issues; because of this, I have a particular passion in treating children with special needs.
I am new to the Reno area, but my husband has lived in Reno for the past 7 years. We love trying new restaurants and traveling to visit our friends and family. We are both California born-and-bred, so we like to keep warm during the winter, but once the sun is out, our favorite thing to do is to visit Lake Tahoe.
I am a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and am an Albert Schweitzer Fellow for Life. I am currently pursuing my board certification in pediatric dentistry.
Fun fact: Bui is pronounced Boo-EE, like a buoy that floats in the water.

I love coming to work everyday. My favorite part is seeing how excited patients are to get started in treatment and how enthusiastic they are the day they get them off. It’s also fun to see how kids grow and change into young adults, as well as witnessing the overwhelming joy some adults have as we give them the smile they have always wished for. We have a terrific staff that loves to take care of our patients. They receive numerous compliments on a daily basis of how nice they are and how much it shows that they love what they do. Invisalign is an integral part of our practice. We are one of the most experienced Invisalign providers in the nation and have helped develop this space age technology to help align teeth. Further, we are among the most experienced providers of Invisalign in Nevada, as well as the entire country. We are classified as a Top 1% provider of Invisalign, indicating we are very experienced in treating all types of patients and bites using this awesome technology. These revolutionary technologies really have motivated me to become a better orthodontist and makes me proud knowing that I’m creating the best smile and healthiest bite possible in the shortest time. In my residency program, I never thought I would be using 3D computer software, robotics, and space-age wires and plastics to create personalized smiles. Orthodontics has really changed in just a matter of years!

I love being able to help our patients overcome fears, conquer pain, and discover that going to the dentist can be a fantastic, painless experience.
Each day brings a schedule full of patients and possibilities, whether we are seeing old friends or getting to know great new individuals visiting for the first time. I enjoy hearing patients share their stories as we work together. I learn a lot from my patients and genuine, lasting relationships form.

Having successful treatment is rewarding to both the patient and me because we feel proud of what we’ve accomplished together. Whether following simple or very complex procedures, it is meaningful for me to see our patients’ futures brighten by improving their health.

Ponderosa Family Dental
Russell Curtis, DMD
I was born in Chicago but moved to Reno as a teenager and graduated from Reno High School. I still consider my greatest High School achievement to have been becoming best friends with the girl who eventually relented and became my wife. After High School, I served a two-year religious mission in Argentina. I returned from this experience with a love of the Spanish language and the Latino culture. As a second-generation dentist, I had always been around the field of dentistry. Still, my true respect and love for the profession came while working as a dental assistant during my undergraduate education. This newfound appreciation for dentistry’s science and service prompted both a change of college major and life direction for me. With my sights now focused on a career in dentistry, I received my dental degree from UNLV in 2006. This allowed my wife and I to return home to work and live in the northern Nevada community that we both love. My hobbies include reading, movies, the love of all things baseball, but most of all, spending time with my six children, six grandchildren, and Zeus, my lone granddog.
At Ponderosa Family Dental, we believe that positively influencing your oral health through enjoyable and effective dental visits is the most important thing we get to do. We take very seriously the opportunity we have to help our patients to receive the best care available and will make every effort to give you something to smile about today and tomorrow! Our continual effort is to provide an environment that supports our patients in all of their health goals.

Steven T. Calderwood was born and raised in Heber City, Utah, a small town near Salt Lake City. After serving a 2 year service mission in northern Japan, Steven graduated from Utah Valley University with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He then continued his education at the University of Utah School of Dentistry, receiving his DDS in 2019.
Dr. Calderwood strongly believes in the importance of the Doctor/Patient relationship in establishing oral and overall health. Through a cooperative and concentrated effort on preventative care, he works with patients towards the goal of establishing teeth that will last a lifetime. Dr. Calderwood also places a huge priority on his family relationship. He and his wife live happily with their 2 boys and 1 girl in Fernley, where he likes to get outdoors whenever he can. Hiking, camping, biking, and fishing are just a few of the excuses he uses to do so.
Legendary Smiles Orthodontics
James Mungcal, DDS
“Orthodontics is the best! Having a great smile has such a far-reaching effect. It promotes good oral health, instills self-confidence and self-esteem, and is many times the first thing people notice when they meet you. There is nothing like the feeling of taking someone’s braces off and showing them their new, beautiful smile. It is truly life changing for many of our patients, and we are so blessed and fortunate to be a part of that experience!”
My most important goal is to provide you and your children with the best possible orthodontic care, with an emphasis on both function and esthetics. Equal to that, my wonderful team and I seek to offer a positive, transparent, warm, and welcoming office experience while we are on this journey together.
Education and Professional Organizations
Dr. Mungcal (aka “Dr. M”) was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He is a proud graduate of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS). Shortly after, Dr. M went on to practice as a general dentist for adults and kids in the Sacramento region, where he found his niche and passion for Orthodontics. To pursue this passion, Dr. Mungcal moved across the country to New York to attend the highly revered Montefiore Medical Center / Albert Einstein College of Medicine for an additional three years of specialized Orthodontic training, serving as Chief Resident for his program. Dr. M is a life-long learner and active member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, and Northern Nevada Dental Society.
Life Outside the Office
The Northern Nevada area is a wonderful place to live and work. I grew up playing in the Palomino Valley desert and swimming in Lake Almanor, so it is no surprise that one of the main reasons I moved back to Reno was to enjoy the outdoors. I enjoy snowboarding, dirt biking, golfing, fishing (although I am allergic to fish!), river floating, and relaxing at any of the Sierra lakes. At home, I love watching stand-up comedy, online gaming with friends, and spending time with family. My all-time favorite activity though is trying new restaurants, eateries, and dessert shops around town, and I am always open to recommendations!
My Kid's Smile
Aaron Duffy, DDS
During my time as a general dentist, I saw many patients who had fears and anxiety about the dentist that started due to their childhood experiences. This prevented them from getting the dental care they needed and impacted the quality of their lives greatly. I decided to become a pediatric dentist in order to help children through their childhood with happy memories of the dentist so that they continue to care for their teeth and enjoy going to the dentist even when they become adults.
Dr. Duffy was adopted from South Korea when he was six months old and was raised in Modesto, CA. He later attended UC Santa Barbara where he earned his B.S. in Biological Sciences. Soon after, Dr. Duffy attended the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco. He then moved to Tucson, AZ where he completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry. This is where Dr. Duffy found his passion for working with children. He then returned to Tucson for two more years where he trained to become a pediatric dentist. Dr. Duffy is part of the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and he is also board certified with the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
During my free time, I love to spend it with family and friends. My wife and I enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, golfing, paintballing, and hiking; which is why the Northern Nevada area was somewhere we wanted to settle. I also enjoy playing board games, video games, and watching movies. Another huge passion that I have is eating. I love trying new foods and expanding my views and knowledge of the world through it.

I love being an orthodontist. The change that I see in patients from the time they enter our office to when they leave makes every day a great day. Having patients walk away with beautiful smiles and confidence makes me love what I do
I consider myself privileged to get to see our patients’ confidence grow as they achieve the smile of their dreams. I also really love seeing a patient’s excitement about the movement of their teeth as their bite improves.
Our staff in Sacramento, Modesto, Roseville, Placerville, and El Dorado Hills feels like a family and we are able to work together as one team. We all like meeting new people. When patients walk in the door, they become a member of our family. We love to laugh and hope to always leave a patient with a big smile on their face.

Family and Free Time
My wife, Megan, and I have been married for over fifteen years and she is truly the love of my life. We live in Sacramento with our five children; two daughters and three sons. They keep us on our toes and enjoying life every day. Our family loves to explore the beautiful area that we live in by camping, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors. We spend a lot of time together as a family and are always looking for an adventure. When I have a few extra minutes, my sons and I can always be found fishing.
Personally, I am passionate about changing people’s lives. If I have the opportunity to volunteer in the community or help those in need, I take it as a privilege to be able to share a little bit of joy. There is so much good in the world today, and I want to help others see that and make a difference in the lives of others.
Sacramento is really a great place to live and we consider ourselves fortunate to be a part of this community. My involvement in our church and the Boy Scouts means a great deal to me.

Emily Vaccarezza, DDS
Working with children has always been a passion of mine. Having the opportunity to provide dental care in a fun and energetic atmosphere brings me so much joy (you may even catch me singing a line or two!). I believe every child is special and I love building unique relationships with each family.
I grew up in the small town of Valley Springs, California, located in the foothills outside of Sacramento. I attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and graduated with a degree in Biology and a minor in Biotechnology. After college I obtained my DDS degree at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, graduating with honors. While in dental school, I served as a student delegate for the California Dental Association for three years. Following graduation, I completed a two-year pediatric residency program through the Lutheran Medical Center in conjunction with Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
I am a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry as well as a member of the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Enjoying an active lifestyle is very important to me and I love exploring the great outdoors. Some of my favorite hobbies include kayaking, cooking, skiing and baseball (go Giants!). My fiancé and I are excited to have recently relocated to Reno and look forward to becoming active members of the community!

The Dentists’ Office
Jared Walker, DDS
Dr. Jared Walker grew up in the small town of Queen Creek, Arizona. He graduated with honors from high school, then served a 2-year church mission in Idaho. It was during this time that he first became interested in dentistry. When his mission companion had a bike crash and broke his two front teeth, he assisted a local dentist in restoring the unfortunate guy’s smile. Using dentistry to replace someone’s pain and uncertainty with comfort and confidence inspired Jared to pursue a dental career.
Jared graduated from the College of Life Sciences at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. He then attended Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine – Arizona and received a degree in Dental Medicine.
Dr. Jared Walker has been practicing in the Reno area ever since and makes it his priority to help patients to feel comfortable when they come to see him. He enjoys getting to know each of his patients and finds satisfaction working with them to assist in accomplishing their oral health goals, whether they involve eliminating pain or performing cosmetic care.
Dr. Walker met his wife Jessica Nash (Curtis) while studying at BYU and pulled off the greatest feat of his life by convincing her to marry him in Reno, near her family. They now have 4 children and are a family of nerds who love Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars (in that order). They also enjoy exercising and spending time outside walking and riding bikes together.
Dr. Walker is affiliated with the American Dental Association, the Nevada Dental Association, the Northern Nevada Dental Society, and the Academy of LDS Dentists. He is dedicated to lifelong learning and keeps up with continuing education in an effort to provide the most up-to-date information and clinical practice for his patients.
